How to transport a dog on a train?

The rules for traveling with a dog on a train vary and depend on the size of the animal. The main criterion is the dimensions of carrying the dog. If the sum of its height, depth and width exceeds 180 cm, then the pet belongs to large breeds. Accordingly, the smaller dimensions of the carrier allow the dog to be classified as a small breed.

Purchasing a ticket

If your dog belongs to representatives of small breeds, then on long-distance trains it is allowed to take it with you in reserved seat and compartment cars. In addition, they are also allowed to travel in NE and in luxury carriages. However, before you buy a ticket, be sure to pay attention to what class of service is in the car you have chosen, and check if it is allowed to transport a dog in it. The difficulty is that not all reserved seat cars can travel with an animal, so this must be clarified in advance. The carrier’s website has all the necessary information.

The price of a ticket for a dog also depends on the class of service in a particular carriage. In some of them, small pets can be transported free of charge, while in others you will have to purchase a ticket. Its cost depends on the distance. Rates are also available on the carrier’s website. You can buy a special ticket at the station right before the trip.

As for large dogs, there are more restrictions on them, and you can travel on the train only in compartment cars, in some SVs and in luxury cars. In any case, you need to pay attention to the special note about the transport of animals in the carriage you have chosen. Another thing is also important: you will have to pay for the comfortable transportation of your pet by buying all 4 seats in the compartment. But in this case, the animal does not need a separate ticket.

Documents

Since the beginning of 2017, new provisions have come into force, according to which, when transporting dogs on long-distance trains across Russia, it is not required to present veterinary documents. But it is important to remember that it is still necessary to take a veterinary passport on a trip, in which all vaccinations are marked.

What to take for a dog on a train?

  • Collapsible bowl, drinker, food and water
  • Unlike an airplane, a dog can eat calmly on a train, without fear of the owner for the reaction of the body. Therefore, it is recommended to take dishes, food and drinking water on the road.

  • Veterinary first aid kit
  • If you are going on a trip, check with your veterinarian which drugs should be taken specifically for your pet. These should be medicines for first aid for injuries, poisoning and allergic reactions.

  • Bedding, disposable diapers
  • The pad can be used on the seat so as not to displease the neighbors in the compartment. Disposable diapers may be needed at night if you have a long trip.

  • Dog paw towel
  • At long stops, it is useful to take the animal out of the train in order to warm up and get some fresh air. Upon returning to the car, it will not be superfluous to wipe the pet’s paws with a damp towel.

  • Pouches for excrement
  • This is a must for both long trips and short ones. It is better to have bags always at hand than if they are not available at the right time.

  • Favorite toys
  • This will create the illusion of home comfort for the dog (familiar smells) and give a sense of calm.
