How to care for a Yorkshire Terrier?

How to properly care for wool? Do I need to cut the nails and bathe the Yorkie? And what kind of food to choose? We will be happy to tell you about the basic rules for caring for these charming dogs.

The Yorkshire Terrier is a charming, miniature and agile companion dog with intelligent beady eyes. But don’t let the Yorkie’s cute appearance fool you. A fragile dog hides a brave heart and a huge soul. The fearlessness and agility of the Yorkie is enough for a pack of dogs.

York is considered one of the most popular breeds: they are willingly planted not only in our country, but throughout the world.

Yorkies are not as easy to care for as some other dogs. But a huge plus of keeping this baby is that it slowly sheds and leaves almost no hair on furniture, carpets and clothes.

York does not need a huge apartment for a comfortable life. He will be comfortable even in a compact studio. But the place where the baby will be most often should be warm and without drafts. It is not worth determining the Yorkie in the far corner: it is important for the dog to have a good overview, to keep everyone in sight.

Like any dog, the Yorkshire Terrier relieves physiological need on the street. But if the pet is still small, sick, or just bad weather outside, you can offer the dog to go to the toilet in a tray or on a diaper.

In order for the Yorkie to calmly sit on the diaper, it is important to teach him to do this as early as puppyhood.

For prospective Yorkie owners, here is a list to take to the pet store before a new family member arrives. And the current owners can check if they have everything for their pet.

What every Yorkie should have:

  • couch;

  • carrying;

  • collar / harness and leash;

  • bowls for food and water;

  • clothes for different seasons;

  • comb, brushes;

  • different toys;

  • rubber bands or bows;

  • Kogterez and Koltunorez;

  • cosmetics for wool, shampoos, conditioners, sprays.

The Yorkie has a special coat, but its care must also be special. We will talk about this further.

The Yorkshire Terrier’s natural coat is thin with a sparse undercoat. To the touch, the coat of dogs is similar to human hair. In adult dogs, hair grows indefinitely. If owners with pets do not take part in competitions and exhibitions, Yorkies are usually cut short: this is easier in terms of care.

In any case, you need to cut the dog only in grooming salons. Trained people will wash the Yorkie, comb it and get rid of tangles with the help of professional products. You can cut your pet yourself, but only if you have special tools and proper experience. Otherwise, you run the risk of spoiling the chic coat. You need to brush your dog every day.

We recommend using scissors designed for cutting dogs. Using regular scissors can lead to split ends and hair damage.

The long hair on the dog’s head is collected in one or more ponytails – this gives the crumbs a funny look. The main thing is to do it carefully and not grab the skin. A great way is to stab the tail and slightly, a few mm, the hairpin up and down. This way you make sure that the skin is not affected.

If during combing you notice a tangle, it must be removed immediately. This can be done with the help of a professional spray for combing tangles. Apply the product to the problem area and comb it gently. Does not help? Then the chisel cutter comes into play. Be careful not to hurt your dog. Better yet, turn to professionals.

Bathe terriers 1-2 times a month or as they get dirty. In this case, you need to use only professional shampoos designed for Yorkies, as well as conditioner to make the coat smooth and shiny. The conditioner closes the scales of the hairs and does not allow dirt to penetrate inside. Due to this, the dog’s coat is less tangled.

Nail clipping is one of the most disliked procedures for dogs. To avoid unpleasant reactions, you should teach your baby to clipping his nails from an early age. It is very simple to understand that it is time for your dog to get a manicure: when the dog moves along the asphalt, laminate or other hard surface, a characteristic clatter is heard. But it is better not to bring it to this and cut the claws systematically.

Before cutting off a claw, find a blood vessel. If it is not visible, highlight the claw with a flashlight. Cut the tip of the claw at a 45 degree angle without touching the vessel. If you touch the vessel, the dog will be hurt, blood will flow. To be safe, in such cases, purchase hemostatic powder at the pet store. It is enough to dip the damaged claw into the powder so that the bleeding stops immediately.

The Yorkshire Terrier is a picky dog when it comes to food. The task of the owner is to organize a balanced and proper diet for the dog and to know a few rules.

  • Yorkies can eat both natural food and industrial food. But you need to choose one thing: mixing these two types of food is not recommended.

  • In the composition of professional feed, meat should be in the first place.

  • If you stop at natural nutrition, you will have to additionally give your pet vitamins, minerals, fatty acids. The diet must be agreed with the veterinarian.

  • Any dog, including the Yorkshire Terrier, should not be given food from the human table and leftovers from your food. For a dog, you need to cook separately and without adding spices and salt.

  • Most Yorkie owners prefer store-bought dog food. They have all the necessary vitamins and minerals, and the owner does not have to spend time preparing them. You need to choose food designed specifically for Yorkshire terriers. If this is not the case, a universal, holistic or super premium class for small or miniature dog breeds will do.

It is important to control the portion size and follow the feeding rate. Treats also need to be taken into account.

Follow your veterinarian’s nutritional advice and read the ingredients carefully before purchasing. It should not contain ingredients that your pet has an individual intolerance to.

Try different brands of food to find one that your friend especially likes. And do not forget about tasty and healthy delicacies – where would you be without them!
