- Stubborn and are extremely persistent;
- Friendly and affectionate;
The Great Vendée Griffon is the largest dog bred in the French department of the Vendée. The first mention of this breed dates back to the 16th century. It was created for hunting big game: wild boars, deer and foxes. The ancient dogs canis segusius , as well as the griffon fov de bretagne, are considered to be the ancestors of the great Vendean griffon .
Perhaps one of the most famous qualities of the Great Vendée Griffon is its friendliness. Large shaggy dogs are interested in strangers, they are open and friendly in communication.
Another distinguishing feature of the French Griffons is stubbornness. It manifests itself especially brightly in the process of training. The owner must be prepared for a difficult training process, because most representatives of the breed often demonstrate waywardness and independence. It is believed that the best method of training these dogs is positive reinforcement, and they are the fastest to learn hunting commands.
It is important to socialize a puppy of a large Vendeen griffon in time (they begin to acquaint him with the outside world early – already from three months). Then the pet will grow up affectionate and sociable.
The big Vendée griffon is a real hunter, reckless and purposeful. It works great in swampy and forested areas and is not afraid of water. It is interesting that, despite the outstanding working qualities, in the 20th century the popularity of these dogs began to decline sharply, and in the middle of the century the breed was on the verge of extinction. However, devoted fans-breeders managed to restore it.
The large Vendée Griffon is warm to children. In the process of playing with kids, the dog shows enviable patience. However, no matter how positive and predictable the pet’s behavior may seem, leaving the animal alone with the child is not worth it – it is still a working breed, not a companion.
The big Vendée griffon treats the animals in the house with interest. He rarely goes into conflict and is considered a fairly peaceful breed. However, much depends on the particular pet and the characteristics of its character.
Grand Griffon Vendéen Care
The Greater Vendée Griffon has a thick, wiry coat that requires fairly careful grooming. Once a month, the dog must be bathed, and every week – combed with a brush.
It is also very important to monitor the condition of the ears , claws and teeth of the pet. They need to be checked weekly.
First and foremost, the Great Vendée Griffon is a hunting breed. And this means that he loves all kinds of sports activities and entertainment. With a dog, you can run, ride a bike, rollerblade, etc. It is also advisable to go outdoors with your pet at least for the weekend so that he can run and play freely.
