Deviations in pH or GH

Water of inappropriate hardness can be fatal to fish. Especially dangerous is the content in hard water of those species of fish that naturally live in soft water.

First of all, the kidneys are affected, metabolic processes in the body are disturbed, and the fish dies either from kidney disease or from other diseases to which it becomes too susceptible. Soft water is also very dangerous for inhabitants of hard alkaline waters, such as African cichlids. Under such conditions, the fish will weaken and become painful. A threat to the health of fish can also be pH overshoot below 5.5 and above 9.0, as well as their significant daily fluctuations.

Symptoms:

By external signs, it will not be possible to determine the problem, since the symptoms will indicate a disease that has affected the fish, which in turn will only be the result of inappropriate conditions of detention. A change in behavior can indirectly indicate the problem – the fish will swim in circles, be inactive, lethargic, sometimes hovering at one point with fins pressed to the body.

Treatment

Treatment methods are directly related to the root cause – inappropriate conditions of detention. The problem is solved if the hydrochemical composition becomes consistent with the recommended pH and dGH values for a particular type of aquarium fish.
