Belarusian draft horses are a light-draft breed that belongs to the breeds of the northern forest type. Today it is the only national horse breed of the Republic of Belarus.

The history of the Belarusian draft horse breed

The breed originated in the 19th century, and already in the 1850s on the territory of modern Belarus there were 22 stud farms and 4 factory stables. Their “population” consisted of 170 breeding stallions and 1300 mares. The qualities that were valued in Belarusian draft horses and strengthened in every possible way are endurance, unpretentiousness and adaptability to almost any conditions. Thanks to this, Belarusian draft horses can remain efficient at a very advanced age – up to 25 – 30 years.

Features of the appearance of the Belarusian draft horse

Most often, Belarusian draft horses have a very thick mane and tail, as well as overgrown (so-called “brushes”) on their legs.

The main colors of Belarusian draft horses are red, bay, buckskin, nightingale, mouse.

The use of Belarusian urpyazh horses

The Belarusian draft horse is often used for agricultural work, but not only. Currently, they are gaining more and more popularity in amateur sports, rental, as well as among private owners. This popularity is largely due to the complaisant nature of the representatives of the breed.

Where Belarusian draft horses are bred

According to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Belarus, Belarusian draft horses are currently bred on the following farms:

  • “Mir” agricultural plant,
  • agricultural production cooperative “Polesskaya Niva”,
  • agricultural production cooperative “Novoselki-Luchay”,
  • communal agricultural unitary enterprise “Plemzavod” Korelichi “,
  • republican agricultural unitary enterprise “Sovkhoz” Lidsky “,
  • state enterprise “ZhodinoAgroPlemElita”.
