Brief information

  • Another name for the breed is a wire cat;
  • Playful and friendly;
  • A rare breed, mostly found in the US and Canada.

Character

The American Wirehair cat, unlike many of its relatives, does not have an aristocratic past. The first wiry kitten was discovered on a New York farm in 1966. His parents were ordinary short-haired representatives of the family.

Interestingly, the coat of a wirehaired cat is similar to the coat of rexes, while they are not related. The dominant gene is responsible for the special structure of the hairs of the American breed. Therefore, breeders managed to breed a new breed quite easily. When crossing American Shorthair and Wirehair cats, kittens with two types of wool will certainly appear in the litter.

The American Wirehair cat is very playful, in addition, she is curious and active. For the combination of these qualities, breeders jokingly call her a tomboy punk.

Representatives of this breed love to be close to their owner. They are quite hard to endure a long separation. For business people who do not have much free time, experts do not recommend getting an American Wirehair cat.

Often, pets of this breed treat strangers favorably, they are not afraid to show interest in guests. They are sociable and love to be the center of attention.

Behaviour

American Wirehair cats easily get along with other animals in the house, even dogs and rodents. But it is worth introducing future neighbors gradually, especially when it comes to cohabitation with representatives of the cat family. Territorial conflicts may arise.

American wirehaired cats treat children favorably. How a pet will behave with a child largely depends on upbringing, including the baby. Despite the playfulness and energy, sometimes the cat still prefers to be alone. To avoid possible conflict situations, it is necessary to explain to the child the rules of behavior with pets.

American Wirehair Cat Care

The coat of representatives of this breed is often compared to a hard sponge or sandpaper. To keep her special appearance, after bathing the cat should not be combed. In general, water procedures are carried out infrequently – two or three times a year will be enough.

The nails, eyes and ears of a cat require monthly inspection and care. If you are new to nail clipping, check out our tutorial video where the veterinarian shows how to do it right.

It has been observed that many American Wirehair cats have very sensitive skin. Therefore, you should carefully choose the means to care for your pet.

Conditions of detention

The American Wirehair cat is a typical city dweller. She does not require walks on the street and can live her whole life in an apartment.

It is important to control the nutrition of the animal. Some pets may suffer from allergies, so the selection of food should be on the advice of the breeder and veterinarian. Although representatives of the breed are not inclined to be overweight, carefully monitor the portion size and quality of nutrition so as not to provoke the development of obesity in your pet.
